Chocolate Letters

@ 1:55 pm | 6 comments

Chocolate letters are very popular in the Netherlands. When the Dutch holiday of Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas’ Eve) approaches, many shops and department stores sell chocolate letters. These chocolate letters are a typical Sinterklaas candy that are given to each person according to their initials. I discovered that the Netherlands was the only place with a St. Nicholas chocolate initial letter tradition.

A few days ago I went to a department store and look what I found!

Yeah, you got it right! Chocolate initials with Arabic letters!!! Cool, huh?

Too bad they only have sin and mim! They don’t have alif! (my initial) I haven’t gone to any other department stores though, who knows they sell these chocolate letters too? :)

I just want to share something interesting I found :D . Unlike in Australia, where the majority of people are unaware about Ramadhan, many people in the Netherlands have at least some knowledge about it. I’d say that we get a little bit of recognition here :) And the way they do it is quite cute hehehe.

We still have one from last year (can’t recall where we got it from), haven’t managed to eat it yet because it is so huge and hard to break to smaller pieces :D .

I think we do have more recognition here than in Australia, but my experience during ramadan in Australia (Melbourne in this case) was much much better than here! One of the things I remember, among other more important things of course, was an ifthar in the Islamic centre where people from different nationalities came to share food!
