Russia

I was just browsing my past emails on Yahoo, and I found an email from Mrs. Deri, a teacher who taught English at my school for a very short time. She told us about her experience studying in countries like Russia and Germany; I think she’s so brave. I was a little bit interested studying in Russia, because of some stupid reasons (hehehe), e.g. Anastasia, Tsar Family, and Russian culture. So I sent an email to Mrs Deri (to ask about Russia) and I was soooo surprised when I read her stories:

For me, studying there was extremely hard. It was very hard because the weather, language, culture and even the letters were different from any other countries that I know of. Nevertheless, Russia has many knowledge that are still hidden and kept safely from the world. You’ll find out that Russia is very rich for its art, music, history, languages and etc that have never been before publicized before. But again, living there is a hard work. You’ll find out that living alone, as a woman has many obstacles and risks. If you don’t have relatives or best friends in Russia, I don’t suggest you to go there. The police and the university won’t help you much because in Russia you’ll be a second citizen. If you’ve been robed and made a complain, they’ll just look and stare at you. The doctor won’t treat you well because again, you are an outsider. One of my friend, didn’t get any treatment because she got a chicken pox and was being sent away to an old hospital without any doctors’ supervision. So, we ’smuggled’, took her away and cared for her as much as possible. Luckily I had a friend who was a doctor and took pity on my friend. He gave her medicines and treated her as a human being.

I mentioned that being a single woman was a hardship. Well, it was. Back then I was living in a dormitory. I was told that the place was safe. I was also told that it’s guarded by a police. Well, it wasn’t safe at all eventhough it was guarded. The police can be bribed most cheaply and the dormitory had many uncovered crimes. Drugs, alcohol and prostitution, were all there. The dormitory that I was in, was supposedly the ’safest’ and ‘cleanest’. Everytime I made a phone call or go to the groceries, I had to be with other ‘girls’. Else, the ‘men’ or other ‘male students’ would tease, follow and even force (rape) on you. There have been many ‘rapes’ in the dormitory. And most of the rapers have never been found guilty.

I’m sorry to give you all those ‘gruesome’ stories. I just want to give you the truth about living there. I lived there and found out that my life is worth a lot more than any university degrees. I had bad experiences because I hadn’t prepare for the worst. Hopefully you’ll have a better experience than I had and be more prepared. Some of my friends successfully got their master degrees (only one was a woman). And you know what? they have suffered but came out to be winners. They have conquered all the obstacles and are now at home safe. [Wed, 05 Jun 2002]

Yes, it’s scary but maybe the situation now is better than 4 years ago. Who knows. Interesting posting anyway.
