- Egypt – I was born and lived there til 1989.. But visited the country again in 1997. I have my auntie, uncle, and cousins who live there for YEARS! I’m honestly not impressed with the city (dirty, disorganized,…), although I enjoyed the museums, pyramids, sphinx, and the unique history of ancient Egyptians ^_^. Egyptians are normally very nice to Indonesians, they respect us as long as we respect them. One thing to remember is that… Egyptians (and mostly Arabs) talk VERY loud as if they’re angry with you (but they actually don’t). Coz that’s the way they talk… Btw, Egyptian foods are greaaaaaaaat! Five thumbs up! hehe
- Turkey – Istanbul is my most fave place!! I’m in love with the city! Soooo beautiful! You can see many gray-mosques; mostly with similar shape & design! There is a huge mosque-like building, i think it’s called Aya Sophia. It WAS a mosque (hundreds years ago), then changed into church, then I think they did the same thing all over again… and now it’s a museum that has Islamic symbols (eg. Allah SWT, Prophet Muhammad PBUH, etc) placed side by side with Christian images. It was so amazing to see that!! I also saw the footprint of Prophet Muhammad PBUH (i don’t know if it’s the real one or not.. but it was so huge!). People barely speak English over there. Especially the taxi drivers. My mom once had arguments with a turkish taxi driver, it was so funny. She spoke Arabic with him, while he spoke Turkish. None of us understood! Hahaha… I wish I could visit Turkey again…
- Lebanon – I went to Beirut when the civil war just ended. So I didn’t really have a good time over there. The city was in a complete disaster, very empty. But I think they had a massive reconstruction right after the war – some ppl refer Beirut as the ‘Paris in the middle east’! Anyway, I like the Lebanese ppl.. they’re just so cool! Compared to other arabs, Lebaneses are very modern, they have french influence (coz france colonized lebanon years ago..). Their arabic accents are soooooooo cool!! Lebanese accents are “soft” (maybe like sundanese in indo) and are often mixed with French. So..sometimes you can hear bonjour, merci, etc. (their second language is french by the way..). And one more thing! Lebanese guys are so hot! The girls are just like models, so sexy! hahaha.. imagine: a mixed of Arab + French! Perfect!
- Palestine – All I can say about the trip is that it was a bit scary hehehe.. We went to palestine by bus from Jordan (or Lebanon? I forgot!). You can see the police & security officers holding massive weapons everywhere! During our stay in Palestine, we got a temporary driver who is an Israeli and happened to have both Israeli and Palestinian IDs! Hahaha.. So when we cross into the Palestinian territory, he changed his kippah (that tiny israeli cloth cap) to the arabic hat (”peci” or smthing like that..). So clever, ay???
